There was a time… in this world, where the difference in earning potential between being an employee and being a businessman being an entrepreneur, or building an organization was very huge.  I don’t think we live in that world anymore. So if somewhere, you feel, why should I reinvent the wheel?  Why should I start creating new systems, new brand identity, everything else? Why should I invent a new sport?  Essentially, what is an entrepreneur?  He has to invent a new sport.  Or he has to invent a new league in an existing sport.  And fair enough, lot of people are there, and they should do it.

But if one of you feel – ‘Mahatria, why can’t I go and join an existing league in the existing sport?  And within that, if I can be the best. If I can become a Chris Gayle in cricket. Or Pollard in cricket, if I can become Ronaldo or Messi or Soros. Where I don’t want to create my own Football League, or I don’t want to create my own football – new sport.  Sport is already there; the league is already there… I will go there and become a big match player. Is that OK?’  Absolutely.

We live in a time when Sundar Pichai as an employee of Google has shown – You can change the world… You can create a brand…  You can create world class products…  You can lift hundreds of thousands of lives…  Tim Cook.  Nobody even thought that Apple will survive without Steve Jobs. And Tim Cook is showing you.   What all is possible and how much can be done?

One of the greatest Indians to have walked this planet, APJ Abdul Kalam. He was an employee. Serving, the Indian Government saving serving the Space Research agencies serving the satellite research agencies serving the missile technology, working for whether it was bark or ISRO he was an employee.  And created such revolutionary breakthroughs in science and technology in this country.

There’s no limit to what we can achieve…

Satya Nadella employee. So today, the sort of corporate structure that is there and some of these employees actually because of their stock options and dividends and salaries and the variable they get, which is productivity linked incentive, what they are earning… some countries GDP is less than that.

So there is absolutely nothing that there is only one way to achieve.  This is his way. That is her way. What is your way? For there is no thou way.  Each one of us have to find our own ways. So I don’t think there is absolutely any shame, in wanting to grow within a system, in wanting to grow within a corporate…

Mahatria, can I be a global citizen? A global employee of a global brand and still achieve everything… what an entrepreneur can achieve.  Absolutely yes.  There’s no question about it.

And I’m telling you, a lot of businessmen would have been better off being employees. I’m telling you every day I’m seeing…  Because they are not so self-motivated, or they have a capital constraint…  or somewhere… they’re not thinkers, they’re workers.  There are people who know how to get the best within a system. There are people who don’t know how to create a system.  There are people who have technical brilliance… because for you to be a successful entrepreneur, you need to be good at all the three.  Any one of these three is missing… you will achieve much greater success in life, as an employee than being an entrepreneur.

You need to have outstanding selling skills. You may not be a field salesman. You may not be involved in direct selling.  But if you don’t have outstanding selling skills, you will not know how to market. You will not know how to design. You will not know how to negotiate. You will not know how to strategize. You need outstanding selling skills.

In fact, the number of brilliant people, capable people, technically the best, but they don’t want to sell. They’re creating world class products and they don’t know how to sell. In fact, their employees earn better than the owner.  The owner of the business is not seeing money. The employees are seeing much better money.

So you need to be extraordinary in selling.

Two – You have to have extraordinary financial acumen. Numbers should speak to you. If you see number, they should talk to you. If numbers don’t talk to you, you will do business by moods. You have to do business by facts and figures. If numbers don’t talk to you, you don’t have numerical intelligence, financial intelligence. If you don’t know how to mobilize capital; if you don’t know how to make, money make money, if you don’t know how to do cash flow management. You will be buried, seen a lot of people – who have built a business and the business has died, purely due to lack of financial acumen.

Three – You have to be exceptional in people skills. Nobody makes it alone.  As an entrepreneur, as a businessman, you cannot scale without the ability to create outstanding teams.  Your people skills, leadership, communication skills, empowerment skills, understanding people, qualifying people, recruiting people, your people skills have to be extraordinary. Mahatria, I will create somebody who has people skills.  To find the person who has people skills, you need people skills.

I have not seen a single entrepreneur who achieved humongous success. Unless they were good at all the three – Selling skills, financial skills and people skills. Any one of the three is… business will be a struggle 15 years. 20 years. 25 years later, you’ll still be struggling. In fact, in the meanwhile, if you were an employee in a large corporation, you would have made more money.  Because… when you work for a corporate, your weakness can be offset by other professionals. When you run your own business at the top, your weakness is revealed.  It’s not offset by other people. So absolutely OK, if anyone of you want to be a professional… want to be career minded and want to be at the top of any global organization. Absolutely OK with that.
